PVM to host Collections Care Workshop

Federal Grant allows museum to offer workshop & training to staff & public.

The workshop will be held Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13 beginning at 10:00 am and running until 4:30 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public. The Prairie Village Museum asks that people register before Jan. 1, 2018.

Professional Conservator Terri Schindel of the Museum Training Network will lead the two-day course. Workshop participants will learn best practices for storing and preserving items like military uniforms and other textiles, photographs, and historic papers. Schedule and syllabus for both days is available by request.

The workshop is funded by a Museums for America grant funded by the Institute for Museums and Library Studies. This $25,000 grant also funds the Museum’s plan to pursue Phase 2 of its collections care and storage plan which includes buying purpose-built furniture to create proper storage for organic items. For dozens of years almost everything owned by the museum was placed on display, but based on advice from museum professionals, the museum staff and volunteers have gradually improved exhibits by developing and following a collections policy, placing some items in storage, and returning loaned items.
